Circuit Symbols I have used a range of electrical components to help to make a variety of circuits for different purposes. I can represent my circuit using symbols and describe the transfer of energy around the circuit SCN 2-09a.

What circuit symbols are What different circuit symbols look like What different components in circuits can do And we will… Be able to identify what different circuit symbols represent Be able to draw circuit diagrams for a range of different circuits Today we are going to find out…

We already know what an electrical circuit is… And we can make things like this! a continuous loop of conducting materials

But, sometimes we need to be able to draw these circuits on paper, to do this we use circuit diagrams. A circuit diagram shows what a physical circuit looks like using symbols to represent the components.

There are lots of different circuit diagram symbols… We use symbols like these… To build these… To represent…

This is the circuit symbol for a single cell This is the circuit symbol for a battery Cells and batteries are the energy source in the circuit What do the different symbols mean?

Bulbs emit light and thermal energy within the circuit.

What do the different symbols mean? This is the circuit symbol for an open switch This is the circuit symbol for a closed switch Switches connect or disconnect the circuit to other parts of the circuit (usually the power)

This is the circuit symbol for a loudspeaker. Loudspeakers change electrical energy into sound energy M This is the circuit symbol for a motor. Motors change electrical energy into kinetic energy This is the circuit symbol for a buzzer (alarm) Buzzers change electrical energy into sound energy

This is the circuit symbol for a capacitor (helps store electrical charge) This is the circuit symbol for a microphone. Microphones convert sound energy to electrical energy

Something that is VERY important to remember is that energy can not be created or destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another… What energy conversions are happening in this circuit?

What is the energy source? What type of energy is this? What type of energy will there be in the wires? What happens in the bulb? Are there any energy changes we don’t want in the circuit? Why?

Your Turn! Fastest hand first! Who can tell me what this symbol represents…
