3 Apprenticeship Information Ambassador Network The Apprenticeship Information Ambassadors Network works with The Mayor of London to promote Apprenticeships. We have full understanding as Training Providers of the current Apprenticeship offer and are able to use our industry knowledge to give clear and impartial information to assist you to signpost young people effectively.

6 Raising the Participation Age (RPA) What is the RPA? From the 2013/14 academic year, all young people are required to continue in education or training. This could be full-time study in a school, college or with a training provider full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training An Apprenticeship

7 Options Post 16+ Options for young people at the end of Year 11 – Continue at school into the 6th Form – Move to another 6th Form – Leave school and start a full time programme at a college/Training Provider – Leave school and find an Apprenticeship – Leave school and find employment with in-house training

8 Options Post 16+ Options for young people at the end of Year 12 – Continue at school into Year 13 – Leave 6 th form and start a full time FE Programme at College/Training Provider – Leave FE or 6 th Form and find employment with in house training – Leave FE or 6 th Form and find an Apprenticeship

There are a record number of apprentices – 450,000 people started an Apprenticeship In England in 2011/12 There are over 250 different types of Apprenticeship to choose from Apprenticeships are available in 1200 different job roles Apprenticeships are available across 80 different industries No university fees

12 Apprenticeships – some myths! Apprenticeships are only available to 16-18 year olds – Myth There is no upper age limit on Apprenticeships Apprentices are poorly paid – Myth Apprentices have a minimum salary of £3.30 per hr The average is £170 pw Advanced Apprentices earn on average £100,000 more than those without over their career Apprenticeships are not as valued as FE/HE – Myth Apprenticeships is vocational learning and lead to nationally recognised qualifications on par with GCSEs, A Levels, HE

Apprenticeships are made up of a series of qualifications and modules that make up a Framework Competency Technical Knowledge Functional / Key Skills / Functional G.C.S.E Employee Rights & Responsibilities Personal Learning & Thinking Skills Guided Learning Hours Additional: Entry Conditions Equality & Diversity Progression

17 How does an Apprenticeship work? It’s a real job The majority of time is spent in the workplace doing your job with the support of your employer. There is also an element of ‘off the job’ training which usually takes place with a training provider or at a college

18 How does an Apprenticeship work? Employer committed to providing appropriate support and experiences to enable you to build your knowledge and skills Joint relationship between Employer, Provider and Apprentice An Apprenticeship should last a minimum of 12 months

A programme designed to prepare people aged 16-24 for work including Apprenticeships – There are 4 elements to a Traineeship – High Quality Work Experience Placement – Work preparation Training eg. CV writing, interview prep, interpersonal skills – English and Maths for young people who have not achieved a GCSE Grade C – Other vocational /industry specific content and qualifications

Traineeships are designed for young people after help on the programme can secure an Apprenticeship or work Traineeship are developed with employers and will last between 6 weeks to 6 months with its contents tailored to the needs of the employer and young person Young people can search and apply via Av

35 How candidates use Find an Apprenticeship Go to: www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk/apprenticeshipsearch Complete registration and complete profile Search for current vacancies Save a favourite search Set up SMS/email alerts for when suitable vacancies become available Apply for vacancies online Check “My Home page” regularly to see progress of applications Remember to include a phone number and a sensible email address for employers to contact you on Check the FAQs section if you get stuck.

36 Applying for an Apprenticeship Top tips for candidates Be formal - Always remember your application is part of the formal recruitment process. It will be viewed by your potential employer. Stand out from the crowd - When asked to answer additional questions make sure you explain your response and give an example if you can – don’t copy the examples given. Spell check - Always read through and check your application before sending. There are spell checkers available on the site, so don’t forget to use them. Make sure it has been sent - Check that your application has been sent and appears in the ‘sent applications’ section of your manage applications ladder.

37 Applying for an Apprenticeship Top tips for candidates Be thorough - Read the advert carefully before you apply. Before you apply, be realistic - Can you travel to the job if it is not local? Do you have the required skills or experience? Qualifications - Make sure you list all of your qualifications, including your predicted grades if you are awaiting results. Work experience - Make sure you list any work experience whether this has been paid or voluntary work. Your application - Use your application as your own personal advert. Ensure it relates to the job you are applying for.
