3 The BIM context - recap BIM is not a software – BIM is not a CAD software BIM stands for Building Information Modeling: (yet) another definition – A model-based approach that consists of creating and managing an integrated virtual representation of the building Integrated through the entire lifecycle Integrated through the different disciplines – The data that represent the building are semantically defined, organized and Inter-related Why would anybody want to do BIM? – For project management and cost estimation – For collaboration – To shorten the time to build – To forecast problems that can arise later and to optimize maintenance execution – For visualization – For certification

4 Problem Business processes need to communicate and share building data – Internal processes: visual collaboration, requirements tracking, reuse of capabilities, design for sustainability, engineering changes, etc. – Collaboration with partners, suppliers and customers – Long term archiving Why is the communication between applications a problem? – The applications are proprietary: few companies know how to “access” them – The versions of the same application are often not compatible – New applications can be used in the future – Data are sometimes managed by legacy applications

5 How the problem is commonly solved One expensive unique software application manages all the data Or several proprietary software applications manage the building data during its whole lifecycle ?!! 7 Why do we care about standards? Have lifetime data availability with complete access to historic engineering and asset data Eliminate paper processes and simplify procurement Maintain mandatory plant records – without paying licenses to software that lock you in – to obtain permissions and certifications Access accurate and timely information and automatic search for data – design changes and modifications are instantly available for maintenance – workers spend less time looking for information Migrate and change software, because of changes in organizational boundaries Improve worker safety with accessible information on procedures, equipment hazards, and hazardous substances

8 The ISO 15926 standard “Integration of life-cycle data for process plants including oil and gas production facilities” From the ISO ISO 15926-2:2003 specification – “construction of buildings, production facilities and equipment.” is out of scope… BUT – “specification of functions required to produce and process the required materials, including ….buildings and accommodation” is in scope Partially overlapping with IFC, promoted by Buildingsmart More related to – large scale projects – Infrastructures Typical usage of ISO15926 – Catalogues and materials – Functional specifications and PI&D Models – Maintenance and replacement of equipment.

9 The ISO 15926 structure Part 2: it provides basic concepts and relationships for modeling Part 7: it provides a mechanism (templates) to collect and connect concepts and relationships Part 4: it provides data that might be common to multiple sectors and projects. They are called Reference data – They include piping, properties, valves, instruments and units of measure.
