UNIT 1 & Comms

People who work with children and families need to have effective communication skills. These can help meet children’s as well as their family's needs. Good communication skills are also needed in child care settings to help teams work well.

UNIT 1 & Comms * Body language and position * Speaking * Listening * Observing and thinking

UNIT 1 & Comms Is about the way we look when we are communicating. The way we stand, use our hands and make eye contact can all give the other person hidden messages. Our position can also send out messages – standing very close to someone can be threatening. Being too far away looks as if we are not interested.

UNIT 1 & Comms

* Speaking is an important part of communication. * The way something is said is as important as the words. * Our speech can also change depending on who we are with. * Good communicators think about the words and expressions they use, make sure these are suitable, and show respect.

Listening is a skill. * Listening to others means thinking about what they are saying and then responding. * Good listeners show they are listening by nodding, smiling and waiting for the speaker to finish. * Eye contact is also a sign that someone is listening, but it does not have to be constant. * Good listeners also make comments and add questions that encourage speakers to carry on, like “That sounded fun, Did you have a go too?” UNIT 1 & Comms

* It is important to observe and think while you are communicating. * Good communicators listen carefully but also look at the other person’s body language. * They observe the effect of what they are saying on the other person. * They make sure they are respectful and courteous. UNIT 1 & Comms

* Some children find it hard to speak to adults. * Using a toy or puppet can help them to relax. We can also help them by: * Getting down to their height * Smiling * Giving eye contact and * Making them feel that we will listen to what they are saying UNIT 1 & Comms

DoDon’t Get down to children's height Give children plenty of time to speak Talk to children Show children you are listening Praise and respond to children X Force children to say hello or speak X Finish off sentences for children X Ignore what children are saying UNIT 1 & Comms

* Communication skills are important to help meet children’s and their families needs. * Good communication also helps child care settings run smoothly. * It is important to listen, watch and think, as well as speak, when communicating. UNIT 1 & Comms
