2 Common Note Taking Mistakes 1. Writing very messy 2. Doodling or daydreaming 3. Writing everything word for word 1. Chemistry: The science that systematically studies the composition, properties, and activity of organic and inorganic substances and various elementary forms of matter. OR 1. Chemistry: The science that studies the composition and properties of substances and elementary forms of matter.

3 Good Note Taking Skills  1. Skim or review any material from previous classes  Look at vocabulary or headings  2. Make sure you’ve got all the materials ready  Come to class with a pencil and paper!!!  3. Highlight, underline, draw arrows, make stars, use abbreviations  B/C…because  W/O…without  First, Second, Third…1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd

4 Good Note Taking Skills  4. Watch for signals of importance  Bold and Underlined words are different because they are important!!  5. Always write any definitions the teacher gives  We wouldn’t give them to you if they weren’t important!  6. Ask questions whenever you have one  No such thing as a dumb question! I guarantee that someone else has the same question.

5 Good Note Taking Skills  7. Leave lines between spaces so you can fill more in later.  Always double space notes  8. Rewrite your notes to study and organize.  One of the best ways to study is repetition  Rewriting notes is a little time consuming, but worth it!  9. Compare notes with a friend.  Studying with friends can be very beneficial

6 Note Taking is made more difficult when… 1. There is no visual cue 1. Arrows and underlined words jump out to your brain 2. The vocabulary is too hard to understand 1. Use simple definitions 3. The teacher talks to fast 1. TELL ME TO SLOW DOWN 4. Too many people around you are talking 1. Ask them to stop talking!!!!! 2. If you are at home, go to a quiet room
