3 Passage for 2/25-2/28 The United States government has three branches: the legislative branch, the judicial branch, and the executive branch. The legislative branch makes and passes the laws. It also coins money and has other powers. The judicial branch can stop a law if it is not fair or if it goes against the Constitution. It also makes decisions in some court cases. The executive branch is headed by the president, who has special powers. For instance, Congress makes and passes laws. But those laws do not go into effect until the president signs them. The president also has veto power. That means the president can stop a law if it is not a good law. All three branches must work together. They do that so that no branch becomes too powerful. This is called the system of checks and balances.
