Food provides the fuel to run your body The energy in food is called calories The number of calories in a food depends on the amount of carbs, proteins, and fat in it

Carbohydrates Are the starches and sugars that provide the body with most of its energy Fiber – found in carbs to aid in digestion; keeps intestines healthy Found in breads, cereals, fruits

Fats You need it for your body to function properly Saturated Fat – solid at room temperature and come from animal foods like milk Unsaturated Fats – liquid at room temp and are healthier for you

Cholesterol It is found only in animal tissue so you can only get it from foods such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy It is what clogs arteries and causes heart attacks

Proteins Are needed to build, repair, and maintain body cells and tissues; muscles Proteins are needed for skin, nails, and hair Too much protein turns to fat

Vitamins Substances needed in small quantities to help regulate body functions Example: Help the body fight infection Ex. Vitamin C found in oranges

Minerals Elements needed in small quantities for sturdy bones and teeth, healthy blood, and daily elimination Ex. Calcium from milk, dairy products, shellfish Sodium- only need 2400 milligrams per day

Water Most common nutrient Carries other nutrients through the body, helps digestion, removes waste from the body, keeps the body from overheating, and lubricates joints

Water Continued…. Your body is 60 % water! You need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day You can get some of the water you need from fruits and vegetables

Dehydration Occurs when the body loses more water than it has taken in Early symptoms: ThirstLoss of Appetite HeadacheFatigue Dry eyes and mouth Dark colored urine

Dehydration cont…. Thirst is the LATE SIGN of dehydration Can lead to nausea, difficulty concentrating, confusion If severe enough can cause death
