8  Food provides the fuel to run your body  The energy in food is called calories  The number of calories in a food depends on the amount of carbs, proteins, and fat in it

9 6 Different Types of Nutrients

10 Carbohydrates  Are the starches and sugars that provide the body with most of its energy  Fiber – found in carbs to aid in digestion; keeps intestines healthy  Found in breads, cereals, fruits

11 Fats  You need it for your body to function properly  Saturated Fat – solid at room temperature and come from animal foods like milk  Unsaturated Fats – liquid at room temp and are healthier for you

12 Cholesterol  It is found only in animal tissue so you can only get it from foods such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy  It is what clogs arteries and causes heart attacks

13 Proteins  Are needed to build, repair, and maintain body cells and tissues; muscles  Proteins are needed for skin, nails, and hair  Too much protein turns to fat

14 Vitamins  Substances needed in small quantities to help regulate body functions  Example: Help the body fight infection  Ex. Vitamin C found in oranges

15 Minerals  Elements needed in small quantities for sturdy bones and teeth, healthy blood, and daily elimination  Ex. Calcium from milk, dairy products, shellfish  Sodium- only need 2400 milligrams per day

16 Water  Most common nutrient  Carries other nutrients through the body, helps digestion, removes waste from the body, keeps the body from overheating, and lubricates joints

17 Water Continued….  Your body is 60 % water!  You need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day  You can get some of the water you need from fruits and vegetables

18 Dehydration  Occurs when the body loses more water than it has taken in  Early symptoms:  ThirstLoss of Appetite  HeadacheFatigue  Dry eyes and mouth  Dark colored urine

19 Dehydration cont….  Thirst is the LATE SIGN of dehydration  Can lead to nausea, difficulty concentrating, confusion  If severe enough can cause death
