Position: Argument 1: Argument 2: Argument 3: Counterargument: Thesis Statements
20
Argument Argument: The New England Patriots are the best team in football. Arg Pt 1: They have the best quarterback Arg Pt 2: They have the smartest coach Arg Pt 3: They have the most supportive owner
21
Counterargument The counterargument is the opposite side of your position. For example, if you are in support of child labor, then your counterargument would explain the reasons people do not support child labor. You want to acknowledge the other side of the argument while continuing to support your opinion.
22
Counterargument For the counterargument, we ask ourselves: Why are the big reasons that some people believe the Patriots are not the best team in football? CHOOSE ONE OF THEM Some people are fans of other teams The Patriots lost to the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game The Patriots have been found cheating by video-taping other teams’ coaching signals
23
Even though some people believe the Patriots have only earned their success through cheating, the Patriots are the best team in the National Football League because they have the best quarterback, they have smartest coach, and they have the most supportive owner. Thesis Format
24
Even though some people believe ____________________________________ (counterargument), ______________________________ (position) because _________________________________ (argument 1), ___________________________(argument 2), and _______________________________(argument 3). Thesis Format
25
Even though some people believe child labor is a violation of human rights, there should be exceptions for child labor laws because it is an income option for families in economic need, child labor increases the size of the workforce, and being employed can keep kids away from trouble.
