The Revolve Tool The Revolve Tool is used to create 3D shapes that are “swept” around an axis. Below are some examples of shapes created with the Revolve Tool.

1. Start a new sketch on a plane or on an existing surface. 2. Draw a 2D shape that does not violate the rules of 2D sketching (overlapping, crossing, hanging lines). The shape must be one continuous loop. Remember that all sketches should be fully dimensioned/constrained. Not shown here.

3. When you have completed your sketch, press the Revolved Boss/Base button. 4. An options box like this will pop up on the left hand portion of the screen. 5. The Axis of Revolution is the first item we need to select. Make sure the box is blue (indicating that the next item we click on will go in this box)

Clicking on this line will select it as the Axis of Revolution. A preview of the result will be shown. Resulting Preview The lines name will be placed in this box.

6. You may change the angle of rotation from 360deg if you need to. The preview will update as you change the value. Angle of 120Angle of 300 7. You may reverse the direction of the rotation if needed. (not applicable if using 360deg). Click this Icon to reverse the direction of the revolve. Angle of 300, Reversed Direction

8. When you are happy with the settings, press one of the two green check marks to accept the revolve

Additional Information Choosing a different axis of revolution results in a different shape. Here are some examples of the same 2D sketch revolved around different Axis of Revolution. (All using 360deg)

Additional Information The axis of revolution does not have to touch the main part of the 2D sketch. An example of this is a Doughnut. A Doughnut is a Revolved Sweep of a Circle around an axis of revolution. Sketch of circle and construction line. Since the axis of revolution is not part of the 2D shape, it must be a construction line. Axis of Revolution
