1 Themes and Motifs

2 * In our society, it seems that what people own is a measure of their success and what they are worth. Gatsby seems to think that if Daisy is impressed by his house, what is in it, the grounds, and, especially his shirts, she will find him desirable. Nick says, “…I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well loved eyes” (96-97). Although Americans are often told that money can’t buy love or happiness, many act as if it will. List evidence you see of this belief. Consider the way people use wealth (cars, clothing, etc.) to make statements about themselves and attract others. What do you believe about using material things to impress other people?

3 * Main idea or message of the work. * Questions to think about theme: * What is the author trying to convey to me in this work? * What is the significance of what the author wrote? * Reoccurring object, structure, concept or idea in a work. * Can be abstract such as an emotion or quality like love, bravery or honesty * Can be used to help develop the theme * Questions to think about motif: * Are there objects, ideas, or concepts I have seen repeated in this book?

4 * In Chapter 5, it starts with Nick’s narrative stating Gatsby’s house was “lit from tower to cellar.” In anticipation of a possible meet up with Daisy he clearly has been checking all the rooms to make sure the house looks perfect for her. Throughout the chapter there are several references to light images. Find 5 other statements dealing with this image and then analyze the significance of the repeated image. Complete this on pages 28-29 in your journal. * In this same Chapter, we also get weather all throughout. Find the places in which the weather is discussed and quote them. Then, analyze the significance of the changing weather throughout the chapter. Complete this on pages 30-31 in your journal.
