Free Response Question Practice Writing

FRQ #1 – You may use your notes/E- books/textbooks Psychology has a variety of complementary yet incomplete perspectives that help us understand behavior. How might each of the following perspectives explain aggression? 1.Biological 2.Cognitive 3.Evolutionary 4.Social-cultural

FRQ #1 Grading Rubric

Biological Brain: Different parts of the brain (need not name the parts) are active when someone is acting aggressively. (1 point) Heredity: Some could have a genetic predisposition to act aggressively. (1 point) Temperament: Some are born with a more aggressive disposition than others. (1 point)

Cognitive: Thoughts: Acting aggressively affects one’s thinking. (1 point) Interpretation: Our interpretation of events could affect aggressive behavior. (1 point)

Evolutionary: Gene survival: Aggression might have facilitated survival and the subsequent passing of genes from one generation to the next. (1 point) Natural selection of traits: From among chance variations, nature selects the traits that best enable an organism to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. (1 point)

Social-Cultural: Different Cultures: What is seen as aggressive in one culture might be seen as normal in another, depending on the cultural context. (1 point) Situation: A situation might affect aggressive thinking and behavior. (1 point)

FRQ #2: Teacher-Graded

FRQ #2 Imagine that you are a sports psychologist interested in the usefulness of a new visualization technique that has been developed for Olympic divers. You have decided to conduct an experiment to determine if the technique is effective. Discuss the importance of each of the following in regard to the experiment you are designing: Population Sample Hypothesis independent variable dependent variable operational definitions control group random assignment replication.

FRQ Sample Response: Population is the pool of possible participant for any research study. In this situation, the population consists of Olympic divers. Sample is the smaller group that represents the overall population. In this situation, the sample should include both male and female Olympic divers from various countries. Hypothesis is the educated guess or the research prediction based on background research. In this situation, a hypothesis could be: “The visualization technique will improve the performance of the Olympic divers.” Independent variables are the variables that are manipulated in the research. In this situation, the independent variable would be the visualization technique. Dependent variables are the variables that are the outcome of the manipulated independent variable. In this situation, the dependent variable would be the quality of the dives.

Operational definitions give explicit explanations of the terms used in the research. In this scenario, an operational definition is needed for the term: “visualization technique” so that during a replication of this experiment, there is no room for misinterpretation. Control group serves as a constant to compare the experimental group’s progress. The control group would not be introduced to the visualization technique. The divers in this group will continue training using their previous or normal methods. Random assignment of participants are needed to ensure that all divers in one or both groups are not of one gender, race, or country. This ensures a more realistic and reliable outcome of the experiment. Replication is the repeating of the experiment to ensure that the outcomes are consistent and reliable.
