Decision Making

Empowered To feel a sense of control over your behavior and decisions “There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened." - Mary Kay Ash

Decision Making Styles

Inactive Decision-Making Style Failing to make a choice….letting others or life make the decision for you *Teens with this decision making style do not know what they want to do, put off making difficult decisions they end up having to deal with whatever happens “I dunno” “Whatever” “Just whatever”

Reactive Decision-Making Style Allowing others to make decisions for you * easily influenced by what others think or suggest…lacking self confidence *Need to be liked by others “I don’t know what classes to take…what are you taking?” “What college are you going to” “What should I wear today?” “Should I go out with him/her” *Teens with this style are not Empowered!!!

Proactive Decision-Making Style One examines the decision to be made, identifies and evaluates actions that you might take, selects an action and takes responsibility for the consequences of that decision. Chose not to do homework for classes resulting in a bad grade….you don’t blame the teacher, lack of sleep, difficulty of homework for being the reason…you acknowledge…you were just lazy and didn’t do the work. *Teens that make Proactive Decisions do so most likely by using steps referred by “The Decision Making Model”

Responsible Decision-Making Model Steps that assure that your decisions lead to actions that promote health, safety, shows respect for self and others and demonstrates good character.

What is a Paradigm “A paradigm is the way you see something, your point of view, frame of reference, or belief. As you may have noticed, our paradigms are often way off the mark, and, as a result, create limitations.” We have paradigms of ourselves We have paradigms of others We have paradigms of life: School-Centered Parent-Centered Friend-Centered  What is your paradigm about your high school years? Discuss with a neighbor.

What is an Principle? Definition:  A principle is a belief you have about whatever is valuable to you. Honesty, Hard Work… “Just as there are principles that rule the physical world, there are principles that rule the human world… If you live by them, you will excel. If you break them, you will fail.” Sean Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Page 24 Journal #3 What do you value? What is important to you? Write 3 principles by which you live.
