Community Service 2014-2015 Ms. Faulstich and Mr. Grunwald

Why Community Service? Have you ever wondered why seniors are allowed to leave the school during X Block? Yes, you’ve earned it, but there’s actually a reason beyond that! There are approximately 60 X Blocks over the course of the year, which is around 70 hours that you don’t have to be here when you normally would. So, to justify this, you are responsible for 20 hours of community service. It’s good karma You have to

What is Community Service? Community Service is any activity that You are not paid for Results in a service to at least one person, and benefits the community Is separate from an activity that you already receive credit for takes place during X Block or outside the school day

What Community Service Isn’t Babysitting your younger brother/sister for free Helping a friend with homework Visiting relatives in a nursing home Anything you get paid for Services or assistance to family members Remember - You are supposed to benefit the community, not your inner circle

Examples? Examples! Volunteering at the VA hospital Volunteering at animal shelters/hospitals Volunteering at local nursing home (non-relatives!) Volunteering at local library Working with local charities and fundraisers Assisting elderly neighbors (non-relatives!!!) with yard work/snow shovelling Coaching youth sports Joining a committee that organizes and runs a Relay for Life event X Block activities such as recycle collecting, etc.

How Do I Community Service? First, ask yourself what you are passionate about. It becomes much easier to fulfill these requirements if you are volunteering for something you feel is worthwhile. Second, try to find organizations that match your beliefs and value systems Third, reach out to these organizations and try to find a convenient schedule Fourth, you must submit a Community Service Plan which outlines what you will be doing

Community Service Plan? We need evidence that you have started thinking about Community Service! We need to know that you are proactively seeking out an organization that you want to contribute to. The form for the Plan, along with all the other documents you need will be posted to the website and Facebook Page, which we will be going over shortly. You must fill this plan out in Notability and upload a PDF to your Community Service Folder, which we will be creating momentarily.

How you are graded: You will get quarterly grades for community service on a Pass/Fail basis: Quarter 1: You will pass if you’ve completed your Community Service Plan. Quarters 2, 3, and 4: You will pass if you’ve completed 6 hours each quarter. You MAY do a bunch of community service in the beginning of the year and have it carry over. -Example: I could do 18 hours of community service this weekend and I’d be set for the year!

How you are graded: We will be keeping track of your community service hours each quarter in Aspen. If you want to track your progress, you may check Aspen. It’s also a great idea to keep your own record of your hours.

Consequences for not completing your hours: If you don’t complete your 6 hours each quarter, you will fail that quarter. Anyone with a failing grade for a quarter will have to spend X-Block with either Ms. Faulstich or Mr. Grunwald and make up those hours in school during X Block. Once you’ve made up your hours you can once again leave during X Block. If you skip this, we will alert the administration. You don’t want to fail this course! It’s the first thing that people see on your transcript, and it’s easy to do!
