14. What classes are required for 9 th graders? English: A focus on Common Core Standards—Reading Literature, Reading Non- Fiction Texts, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Math: A focus on Common Core Standards—Reasoning, Explaining, Modeling, Seeing Structure, using Tools and Generalizing. Science: A focus on the Next Generation Science Standards—Laying Foundational Concepts and Introduction to Physical Science. Health: An MCS required course—Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, Family, Nutrition, First Aid, Disease, and Mental and Emotional Health. World Geography & Religions: Examination of the 5 themes of geography and the six major world religions. (AP Geography full year course) Physical Education: Take the Physical fitness state test, be educated about lifetime benefits of exercise and experience the social benefits of cooperative learning. Electives: All students need a total of 55 units of electives to earn a diploma.
