3 Recap Homework: Pages 33-35 Comment on the way that Willy is raising his boys. What sort of father is he? How much has Willy’s own father influenced the way that he is raising his own children? How much does Ben influence the way that Willy raises Biff and Happy?

4 Close Analysis—Willy’s Father (p.32 & 33) Annotate the extract in detail. What is suggested by the following phrases? ‘a man with a big beard’ ‘sitting around a fire…[playing] the flute’ ‘a wild-hearted man’ ‘toss the whole family into the wagon’ ‘made more in a week than…you…in a lifetime’ What type of Man is Willy’s father?

5 Close Analysis—Ben. (p.32 & 33) Why does Ben fight with Biff? Comment on the stage direction ‘Suddenly comes in…’ Why does Ben tell Biff to ‘Never fight fair with a stranger…’? Is this good advice? What is Linda’s reaction to Ben? Why is this strange? Why is it strange that Ben asks Willy what he does?

6 Homework: Read on to page 35 and annotate closely. What does this section of the play (p.33-35) reveal about: Willy’s father and the effect of his disappearance on the way Willy raises his boys. Ben’s effect on Willy Growing tensions in the way Willy and Linda exercise parental control Use PEEL
