2. The play takes place mainly in the 1940’s but Willy Loman( main character) has flashbacks that take us to the 1920’s. The play takes place in New York, most likely Brooklyn or Manhattan. Willy travels for work to Boston. Setting/Time Period

From cars to drapery inside homes this provided many useful tidbits of information about the time period. The car symbolized Will’s dream for success that keeps eluding him. Quote: “LINDA: How’d the Chevy run? WILLY: Chevrolet, Linda, is the greatest car ever built. […] LINDA: No, they did a wonderful job. Then you owe Frank for the carburetor. WILLY: I’m not going to pay that man! That goddamn Chevrolet, they ought to prohibit the manufacture of that car!” (Act 1)

Women wore wide padded shoulders, nipped in high waist tops, and a-line skirts that came down to the knee. Women's Clothes Fun Fact: There was a shortage of fabric, so two piece suites like these more common due to the accessibility and comfort of them. It also allowed more creativity when creating them because they were made from scrapes so many patterns were mixed and matched with others.

6. Seeds: Willy is frequently troubled by feelings of confusion and inadequacy. He’s uncertain about how to raise his sons and worries that, like his own father, he will be unable to provide for them. "Nothing’s planted. I don’t have a thing in the ground" We can imply that he is talking about his two boys Happy and Biff. Willy is also worried about being well liked up until the very end. It’s also ironic in a sense seeing as Biff was a farmer, Willy is good with his hands and so is his son. Stockings: Willy gives stockings to the woman he has an affair with, and repeatedly yells at Linda for mending her stockings in front of him (they seem to be a reminder of his affair and how he’s not providing for his family). Flute: Willy’s father was able to make a good living by simply traveling around the country and selling them. This anticipates Willy's career as a salesman, but also his underused talent for building things with his hands, which might have been a more fulfilling job. The flute music is a constant reminder of what Willy’s father had and what Willy may never achieve, yet he strives for it. Symbols

9. Personal I really wanted to focus on the symbols in the play. Many of them go missed and seem irrelevant but they add emotion and body to a character. Which is key in a play with characters it such depth.
