Post-Civil War A.South was devastated in all aspects B.Reconstruction was the reintegration of the southern states into the Union 1.It was the state’s job to rebuild things 2.Hard to do without any money 3.The federal gov’t took a major role in protecting the freed slaves C.Northern Republicans have control of Congress

Reconstruction A.Southern states pass Black Codes 1.Laws that restrict the freedom of black people B.They elect former Confederates to Congress C.Vigilante groups engage in violence toward the freedmen D.South opposes the Freedmen’s Bureau 1.Organization meant to help all those affected by the war E.South opposes the 14 th Amendment
