4 Students are taught a variety of strategies for getting to the correct answer. This helps students become more fluent with their math thinking, and increases their ability to recognize when they have the wrong answer. As the year progresses students will become better mathematicians by: analyzing what they already know applying a strategy that makes sense reflecting on their work to determine if their solution is reasonable. Math instruction focuses on: Thinking Deeply Integrating Previous Learning With New Concepts Showing HOW They Know Through Explanation Learning Through Collaboration COMMON CORE ASKS STUDENTS TO THINK DEEPLY ABOUT THEIR MATH!

5 COMMON CORE ASKS STUDENTS TO THINK DEEPLY ABOUT THEIR READING! Grades on the report card for reading are measuring student comprehension of the text. Students are asked to Think critically about the text Find proof using the text Show understanding through writing and discussion Reread in order to come to a deeper understanding of the text There is a progression of questioning that moves from the literal-to the inferential, and finally to analytical thinking as students work with their text. We work on comprehension and foundational skills as a part of the guided reading group.

7 Grading and Reporting Grades reflect what students know and are able to do in relation to grade-level expectations. Grades mark the progress towards end of the year goals. Learning is evaluated using varied tasks/assignments such as tests, projects, reports, teacher observation, and discussions. Graded work will be stored in the Student Learning Notebook which will come home on a bi-weekly basis. Papers SHOULD NOT be removed from the notebook. MCPS uses a grading program that is standards based.
