2 C30-20071203-027 2 Background Femtocells are of great interest in the wireless community at present. A femto work item has been approved in 3GPP2, and the requirements work is in progress [1] Femtocells can be built using current air interface standards, but performance can be optimized / improved with standards changes. As part of the femto workshop [2], air interface issues were discussed, including modeling, interference, synchronization etc. Some contributions related to modeling have been presented in WG3 [3] and the femto workshop [4].

3 C30-20071203-027 3 Next Steps Develop a WG3 work plan for femtos We propose the creation a femtocell ad-hoc to channel work related to femtocells Priority for 1X and DO related work.

4 C30-20071203-027 4 Scope of proposed Ad-Hoc Develop simulation methodology for femtocells, including modifications to channel models. Create feasibility document with benchmark simulations –Macro-femto co-channel deployments –Dedicated femto deployments Specify air interface enhancements for future femtocells. Examples are: –Interference management techniques –Radio aspects of system selection behavior, mobility management, access control Specify changes to the minimum performance specification

5 C30-20071203-027 5 Timeline Airvana’s view of the timeline: –Modeling and feasibility study – 1Q 2008 –Standardization Stage 2: 2Q 2008 Stage 3: 3Q 2008
