2 Lincoln vs. Douglas Objective: – Explore the history of slavery in America and the beginning of the Abolitionist Movement leading up to the Civil War. – Students will analyze the significance of slavery in America by examining the situation Africans faced in the south and north and determine its long-term effects. Essential Question: – What were the main causes and effects of the Civil War? Standard(s): – 1.9 – 1.10 – 2.1

4 ANNOUNCEMENTS 1.How to pass Semester 1  Earn at least a C- this Quarter.  Do the Extra-Credit essays on the Final Exam.  Minimum Effort = D-.  Get more than a C- and do well on the Final Exam can = a C or B. 2.Cellphone & Gum policy  Cellphones & gum are a serious disruption.  We will be lining up outside of the classroom this week (and next) to dispose of gum and to put away our electronic devices.  That will be your warning. If I see it again I take it away for the class period. Believed majority should not have the power to deny a minority rights to life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness. Did not believe in equality of whites & blacks. Did not want to get rid of slavery in the south, but believed it would eventually die out if contained in the south. Douglas Elected to the US Senate in 1846. Issue of slavery raised several times. Compromise of 1850: 1. California = free state. 2. New Mexico & Utah would decide on allowing slavery. 3. Abolish sale of slaves, but not slavery in Washington DC 4. Texas give up claims to New Mexico. 5. Fugitive Slave Act – All citizens assist in return of escaped slaves. 9 Cause 1. Dred Scott Decision (what was it about?) p.365 Ex. The Dred-Scott decision was a controversial issue in which an enslaved man and argued that because he and his wife lived in a non-slave state he should be considered free. Effect (What was the ruling of the case?) Ex. The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 again Scott. All slaves are not considered citizens, had no right to sue. Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. Slaves were property of owners (5 th amendment). Congress had no power to ban slavery anywhere. All territories were opened to slavery. 2. Lincoln-Douglas Debates (why were they debating? What were they debating about?) p.366 3. Harper’s Ferry (explain the event) p. 368 4. Lincoln Elected (Explain the election of 1860) p. 369-370 5. Southern Secession (How/Why/When did the South secede?) p. 370-371 (What was the outcome of the debates? What was the popular opinion of Northerners and Southerners?) 10 Lesson Assessment: A Civil War Map Color the map to find out how the United States was divided during the Civil War. 1. Follow the directions as shown on the worksheet. 2. Color in the states. – Use only 3 different colors and diagonal pencil/pen lines. Slaveholding States = Diagonal Lines. 3. Cut out and glue into notebooks. – 4. 5 Points Extra Credit: In 1861 West Virginia separated from Virginia. It became a state in 1863. Study the map. Write why you think West Virginia became its own state.
