2 The non-profit organization, Assisting Diverse Learners, presents George Kerscher, Ph. D at the Ethical Issues in Technology Lecture Series event at Northern Arizona University. George Kerscher will be speaking on Monday, July 12 about inclusion and assistive technology in PK-8 grades.

4 George Kerscher, Ph. D Kerscher began his work when he founded Computerized Books for the Blind in 1988 as an advocate for individuals unable to read traditional books. Kerscher's work has continued with time, and his efforts have lead to more books becoming digitized in formats that are easier to operate. George Kerscher is a strong advocate and positive example for inclusion and assistive technology.

7 Design & Selection Choosing the correct technology for a student is the key to helping with a child’s success: Based on the child’s previous experiences and abilities The environment where it will be used The child’s cultural beliefs and values systems Functionality and availability Based on barriers it might remove or create

8 Training & Support Explaining why assistive technology is necessary is an important step of successful implementation. Teachers must also be trained on how to use different equipment appropriately in the classroom. General education teachers benefit from an overall awareness of assistive technology.

9 Cost Initial investment must be considered, but it is not the only cost. Repairs and replacement will need to be considered in budgeting for assistive technology. Lecture will include ideas and strategies for locating resources that can assist in funding these necessary devices and services.
