The Campus Commuter Challenge: Promoting sustainable transportation at post-secondary institutions in Manitoba

What is the Campus Commuter Challenge?  A sustainable transportation event organized by Resource Conservation Manitoba  Involves 8 university and college campuses within Manitoba  Held annually during the last week of September

What is the Campus Commuter Challenge?  Campuses compete for two challenges: highest overall number of students registered and highest per capita registered  Students participate through using a form of sustainable transportation for their commute and register their participation online

What is the Campus Commuter Challenge?  All participants are entered to win individual prizes including free transit for the school year and gift certificates to local bike shops

How does it work?  Volunteer campus coordinators act as steering committee for overall event and organizers for their respective campuses  Paid coordinator provides support to campus coordinators (obtaining prize donations, providing promotional materials, website support, etc)  Operates on a small budget receiving significant levels of volunteer support, prize donations and media coverage

Benefits of the Program  Provides forum for other transportation-related workshops and events (speakers, films, bike-repair workshops, etc)  Engages students in advocacy and organizing

Benefits of the Program  Rewards individual students for using sustainable transportation  Raises the profile of sustainable transportation issues and TDM at post- secondary institutions
