By Ms. Brown

Butterfly eggs come in many different colors and shapes. Some of the shapes are oval, spherical, and pod shaped, colors include white, green and yellow. First the Butterfly lays an egg.

When the egg hatches the Caterpillar eats it’s egg shell, and then eats the plant on which it was born.

The caterpillar eats and eats, but when its skin becomes too tight the skin splits; it splits four or five times. The last time it splits the caterpillar spins a little silk pad on a twig or leaf and attaches itself to it. It is now in the pupa stage. The cocoon is called a chrysalis.

When the butterfly is ready to emerge the chrysalis splits and the butterfly comes out, and it is very beautiful. The butterfly must wait until it is dry before it flies away.

After the adult emerges it flies away and the life cycle begins again.
