3. The First Stage in the Cycle
The first stage is the egg. A ‘butterfly’ is born as an egg. The eggs are born on a leaf and after about four days they turn into a caterpillar.

4. After about 4-7 days the eggs hatch and become a caterpillar (larva)
After about 4-7 days the eggs hatch and become a caterpillar (larva). The caterpillar stage is the main and primary stage for eating and growing. In this stage it gets the nutrients it needs to turn into a butterfly. Just like there are different butterflies, there are different caterpillars. It stays a caterpillar for about two weeks.

5. This stage is when the caterpillar forms a chrysalis or pupa and wraps itself in it to transform into a butterfly with wings. This is a resting stage for the caterpillar and it stays in the chrysalis for roughly two weeks. The chrysalis is a color like it’s surroundings to keep it safe from other animals and insects.

6. After about a week, the butterfly begins to come out of the chrysalis and spread it’s wings. After a little warming up from the sun the butterfly is ready to fly away.
