The ancient Olympic Games were a part of a major religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus. The place where the sportsmen took place was called Olympia.

In 776 B.C. the first Olympics began in Europe at Olympia, Greece. Only men could take part in the Olympic games.

Women were not allowed even to watch the competitions at the stadium under the fear of death penalty. There was a single exception, when a woman trained her son and accompanied him to the stadium in men's clothes. That brave woman was spared the penalty because her son won in many events.

A French teacher Pierre de Coubertin found the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

The Olympic Rings Pierre de Coubertin made up the Olympic Rings. What do they symbolize? They represent 5 main regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Australia. The rings are of 5 colours: blue, yellow, black, green and red.

He organized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) (Международный Олимпийский Комитет). Now over 150 countries are in IOC.
