Table of Contents p. 1 Science News “Born to Heal” p.2 Chromosome Notesp. 3 Double Helixp. 4 Karyotype Notesp. 5

Karyotyping : P. 5 SNB (Number 1- 11) Look at the green karyotype in front of you. 1.What can you observe about the pattern of the chromosomes? 2.What gender do you have on your karyotype? 3.Compare with your neighbor. How is theirs different?

Autosomes vs Sex Chromosomes 1.Which chromosomes on the karyotype are autosomes? Chromosome pairs 1-22 are autosomes. One chromosome from each parent makes up a pair of autosomes. 2.Which chromosomes are sex chromosomes? Sex chromosomes are pair 23 (X and Y). The first X is from the mother. The second chromosome, which determines gender, is from the father.

Autosomes vs Sex Chromosomes 5. Which chromosomes on the karyotype are autosomes? List their numbers in your SNB. 6. Which chromosomes are sex chromosomes? Write their numbers in your SNB.

Aneuploidy: is an abnormal number of chromosomeschromosomes

Aneuploidy in Karyotyping Look at the blue karyotype. 7. What differences do you see in this karyotype compared to the green one? 8. Can you identify what your blue karyotype shows? 9. Compare with your neighbor. Is theirs different?

10. How does aneuploidy happen? Nondisjuntion

11. Which karyotype do you have? Trisomy 18 –Edward’s Syndrome Trisomy 13 – Patau syndrome XXY Klinefelter’s Syndrome XYY “Syndrome” Trisomy 21 Down syndrome X - Turner Syndrome

Reflection: Which chromosome is largest, #1 or #21?
