Everyday Math 2 nd Grade Unit 2 Lesson 3 Doubles Facts I can review and practice doubles facts.

Math Message Write all the doubles facts you know in your Math Notebook… Example: 2+2=4, 5+5=10 What patterns do you notice? TPS

Math Message Follow- Up Create Word Splash together, on a poster, out of all the doubles facts you could think of. Do Not Include duplicates! Do you notice any patterns? HINT: odd/ even

Mental Math & Reflexes Whisper the sums *4+2= *3+6= *7+1= Cackle the sums. **5+4= **6+8= **7+5= Giggle the sums. ***_+8=13 ***6+_=14 ***50+40= ***60+60=

Vocabulary 1.Doubles facts 2.sum 3.Facts table 4.Row 5.Column 6.Diagonal

Vocabulary doubles fact The sum of a 1-digit number added to itself, such as = 8. A doubles fact does not have a turn-around fact sum The result of adding two or more numbers. For example, in = 8, the sum is 8. Same as total. facts table A chart showing math facts. column A vertical arrangement of objects or numbers in an array or a table. row A horizontal arrangement of objects or numbers in an array or a table. diagonal A line segment joining two nonconsecutive vertices of a polygon.

Teaching the Lesson What patterns do you notice in the locker numbers? Facts Table (Math Journal p. 27)  Practice how to read  Check doubles facts from Math Message (shade) Almost Doubles (Math Journal p. 28)  Domino Patterns  How can doubles facts help with almost doubles?

Ongoing Learning and Practice Doubles or Nothing (Math Journal p. 29)  Shuffle cards, take top card, write the # in a square.  Take turns until all 4 squares are filled for Round 1.  Add the squares: across each row, down each column, and along each diagonal.  Look for pairs of identical sums. Circle and make doubles facts.  The doubles fact sum is the round total, otherwise it's zero.  Continue.

HOT Questions 1.What patterns do you notice on the Facts Table? 2.Give an example of one of the patterns on the Facts Table. How might this pattern help you learn your addition facts? 3.Why is it important to know how to find patterns in mathematics?
