1 Math Message 1.1 Introduction to Everyday Math Student Reference Book Look through your student journal for things that may be different from your fourth grade math book. Read “Welcome to Fifth Grade Everyday Mathematics” on page 1. Underline any words that you do not know or that you think are interesting.

2 Math Message 1.2 Rectangular Arrays Arrange 12 counters into as many different rectangular arrays as you can. Then choose and draw one of the arrays.

3 Math Message 1.3 Factors Solve problem 1 on the top of journal page 10.

4 Math Message 1.4 The Factor Captor Game Which of the following numbers are factors of 36? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Record your answers on a piece of paper. Write the multiplication facts you know for 36.

5 Math Message 1.5 Divisibility Solve problems 1 and 2 on the top of journal page 13.

6 Math Message 1.6 Prime and Composite Numbers Draw all possible arrays for these numbers: 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 16.

7 Math Message 1.7 Square Numbers Use counters to make a rectangular array with an equal number of rows and columns for each number 14, 16, and 18.

8 Math Message 1.8 Unsquaring Numbers Find the numbers that make these statements true. * = 4 2 = 81

9 Math Message 1.9 Factor Strings and Prime Factorization 8 + 8 and 4 * 4 are two names for 16. Write at least five other names for 16.

10 Math Message 1.10 Progress Check 1 Complete the Self Assessment sheet your teacher gives you for unit 1. Check one box for each skill that best reflects your progress.
