Analyzing and Practicing the Use of Quotes

Sample Drafts First-Year Writing, p ▫What is the quote doing for the paragraph?  How is it connected back to audience and purpose?  Does it help support the argument created in the thesis? ▫How is the quote incorporated into the sentence and paragraph? ▫What is working? ▫What isn’t? ▫How can it be improved?

BA5: Graded Samples The Ethnobiologist’s Dilemma ▫Group Analysis  Are the quote and choice selected relevant to the author’s audience and purpose?  Does the assessment effectively explain how the use of the quote will help support the student writer’s argument?  Does the assessment make it clear where in the essay the student writer will use that quote to support his argument?  What is and is not working?  How can the sample be improved?

Practicing for BA5 Using one of the quotes from your BA3 Revisions ▫Explain how or why the quote will be useful for your essay. ▫Where in the essay would you place this quote? ▫How does the use of that quote support your thesis? ▫Incorporate the use of a quote into a sentence. I will go around the room checking work and answering questions.
