Class of 2016 Senior Advisory 2/17/16

What’s next?

The Presentation, March 24 th  All seniors will present their senior project on Friday, March 24 th.  On March 9th, you will receive an appointment time & room number.  Please arrive minutes early & report to the library to sign in.  Bring a back up of your presentation in case your thumb drive doesn’t work that day, or if the file goes corrupt.

What is expected?  Arrive well rested, dress in business casual, and bring your project and portfolio.  Your panel will score 3 major rubrics;  Portfolio  Presentation  Product (Service, Creative, Research)  You will have 20 minutes to present to your 3 assigned teachers about the entire project.

The Research Project Those who are writing the 9-12 page research paper should bring TWO copies. Include one copy in your Portfolio, and a second copy to be graded in the library that day. You will receive information about the grading process for the Research product on March 2.

The Service Project Your Experience Log is your most important component of your Portfolio. It shows your 50 hours (the panel will add it up!) and MUST have a signature (with name printed as well) of an administrator at your service location. Panelists enjoy seeing pictures of you during your service as well. If you have NOT reached 50 hours by 3/24, you will still complete your Presentation on 3/24! You will need to follow up with Mrs. Sharkey after Spring Break.

The Creative Project Be prepared to bring in your creative product to share with the teacher panel. If you need a special room location to accommodate your product, let Mrs. Sharkey know by February 26 th. Don’t forget to include your Experience Log and any related pictures/documents to show all your hard work.

Presentation Considerations  You will present your senior project to a panel of 3-5 faculty members.  Dress in casual business attire.  Act and speak appropriately for a presentation.  PowerPoints are NOT REQUIRED, but recommended to help keep you on track.

Presentation continued… Discuss: – An introduction including your 4-year journey through high school. – Information about your topic. – Information about your product, how it was made and how it relates to your topic. What knowledge or experience were you hoping to gain from your project? – A conclusion

Presentation Guidelines  Your speaking time should take about 20 minutes of the 30 minute appointment block.  Speak clearly and professionally.  Be prepared to answer questions after your presentation.  Make sure you’ve rehearsed.  Pictures, pictures, pictures! Your panel of teachers wants to see that you had a memorable and worthwhile experience

When you are finished speaking, You will leave the room for 5 minutes so the panel can score your presentation, portfolio, and project. A teacher will call you back into the room to find out if you passed or if you need to revise and resubmit any parts. If you need to revise work, you may check in at the library to find an available computer. You will keep your Portfolio with you, regardless.

WOW! Students who have done exceptional work throughout their entire Senior Project may be nominated for a WOW! Scholarship. Your panel will let you know if you are nominated, and you will receive a letter when we return from Spring Break regarding the next steps.

WOW! To qualify for the WOW! Scholarship, you must have completed & passed all components on time. You will then need to: – Sign an intent form to move forward with the nomination – Write an essay – Resubmit your portfolio and re-present on April 15

That is IT! Once you have successfully PASSED ALL RUBRICS for the Senior Project, you will be DONE! – Background paper – Resume – Reflection paper – Portfolio – Product – Presentation

And to Review from last Advisory…

The Portfolio includes:  Table of contents  Topic approval form  Parent letter  Background research (clean copy, rubric optional)  Resume  Experience Log  Reflection  Documentation of service learning hours or product completion, if necessary (separate from Experience Log)

If you are missing an item for your Portfolio… The Portfolio rubric takes each required section into consideration. If you turned in only 1 copy of a document, you will need to request a copy be made for your portfolio. If you can reprint from home, PLEASE DO SO. This will take time, please be patient. Mrs. Sharkey has request forms for you in her classroom.

Introduction  ½ page - titled as: Introduction  Explain your project, giving the topic, some basic information, and what type of project it is.  You may use, “I” in this component.  Keep this as a page SEPARATE from Research and Reflection.

Reflection (due 3/2)  3-5 pages - titled as: Reflection  This paper can be in the first person (“I”) and does not need citations.  Describe the process of your project, what you did, what you learned, and why it will help you in the future.  Tell the outcome of your project (if you had an event or creative project.)  Reflection papers will be graded on Presentation day. Turn in ONE copy to Mrs. Sharkey for your file on 3/2/16.  Questions to guide this paper are on the website (see SP NEWS section) or in Mrs. Sharkey’s room.

Experience Log  As you work on your project, update your experience log.  Service and Creative projects must complete this. It documents steps you go through during the process, from selecting your topic to completing your project.  Include photos, notes and signatures from interviews or service hours as appropriate.

Presentation  On March 24 th, you will present your senior project to a panel of 3- 4 faculty members.  Your presentation will include:  An introduction including your 4-year journey through high school.  Information about your topic and research.  Information about your product, how it was made and how it relates to your topic.  Consider using a Powerpoint to keep you on track.  We will review this in detail during the next Advisory.

Summary To clarify: the next due date is March 2 nd for your REFLECTION PAPER ONLY. All late work should be turned in ASAP. You should begin organizing your Portfolio and finishing up the project between now and March 24 th ; Presentation day. If you need copies of items for your portfolio, you can fill out a request sheet found in room A219.

Exit Remember to use the SENIOR PROJECT section of as a resource! ALL Powerpoints shown in Advisory can be found on the SP NEWS section of the website.
