Types of Assessment in Education Week 2

Types of Assessment In the previous week’s lesson we saw that there’s two basic types of assessment formal and informal assessments. However, there are more types of assessment that can be used in education. Assessment can be broken down even farther and then divided in the camps of formal and informal, which we will do later.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Educators use Bloom’s taxonomy to determine the level of question and to help the students expand their comprehension skills and their ability to apply information that they read, hear, and see. It helps the teacher or educator assess what the student understands and how they understand it.

Levels of Bloom’s Level I – Knowledge: The ability of the student to recall basic information. Level II – Comprehension: This is the ability of the student understand, translate, and interpret information. Level III – Application: The ability of the student to apply information gained to use in other instances. Level IV – Analysis: This is the stage where the student can differentiate between facts and inferences in information given. The student at this level is also able to separate information in his/her mind in an organized fashion. Level V – Synthesis: This is the ability of the student to take parts of information and put it together to make a whole. Level VI – Evaluation: This is the student’s ability to make judgments about ideas.

Quizzes and Test The first type of assessment that we will look at is tests and quizzes. Tests and quizzes can ask closed questions or open ended questions. The majority of standardized tests are multiple choice assessments only requiring students to use recall skills. Short answer, matching, fill-in-the-blank are also recall questions for the most part.

Quizzes and Tests (cont.) Essays and questions that allow the student to express their knowledge, open ended questions, are not recall questions. These questions allow the student to express thoughts and show application and synthesis.

Academic Prompts Academic prompts are open ended questions, including essay questions, that allows the student to use critical thinking skills. These responses typically are organized, grammatically correct and require the student to assimilate information.

Performance and Task Projects This type of assessment is performance oriented and requires the student to assimilation information, think critically and be able to articulate and present the information in a fashion that evidences their level of mastery with the information. This form of assessment typically has specific guidelines for the student to follow and may require research on the part of the student.

Quick Quiz 1. Can you name the six levels of Bloom’s taxonomy? 2. What type of assessment is an essay exam? 3. What type of assessment would a children’s science project be? 4. What type of assessment would a short answer pop quiz be?

Assignments for Week 2 1. Read PowerPoint notes 2. Read Ch. 2 and 3 3. Master’s students: Read additional pages and use Reading Report Form. 4. Take Week 2 Quiz 5. Write up: Do you believe that Bloom’s Taxonomy is helpful in planning lessons? Why or why not? (This is also Journal 2 for online students.)
