1 Using Assessment to Inform Instruction EDC 448 Session 5 Diane Kern University of Rhode Island

2 “Any teenager would rather be perceived as lazy than stupid” p. 103 What is your response to this quote from Tovani? What is your view of evaluation as compared to assessment? What is the difference? How do you plan to highlight your students’ strengths rather than their deficits?

3 What we’ll do tonight Share practical ways to use assessment to inform instruction (in our lesson plans and beyond) Practice writing literacy strategy objectives Develop effective opening (hook ‘em), middle (teach ‘em) and closing (learn ‘em) lesson ideas Time to work on your own lesson ideas Conference assignment overview Discuss Midterm Exam

4 Backwards Design for lesson planning… What do you want to teach? How will assess student learning? Plan it!

5 Writing measurable strategy objectives… The student will… make connections self question draw inferences determine importance use fix-up strategies visualize synthesize

6 Writing measurable content objectives… The student will… evaluate demonstrate list categorize identify :) Bloom’s taxonomy verbs :( understand :( know :( learn---how do you measure these??

7 The student will… KNOWLEDGE define, repeat, name, recall COMPREHENSION express, restate, identify APPLICATION use, employ, interpret ANALYSIS compare, distinguish, analyze SYNTHESIS design, plan, compose, create EVALUATION judge, evaluate, select, rate

8 Writing content and strategy objectives Content objectives cite National Content Standards for your content area (not necessary for this course, but you’ll need to know how to do this for student teaching) Strategy objective must involve a comprehension strategy and cite GSEs for your target grade level

9 Assessing thinking strategies Need multiple assessments, such as… Class charts-goal driven Conversation calendars (page 109) Reading response logs Work samples--including graphic organizers Quick conferences (perhaps the best, but how do I find the time?) Testing, quizzes, essays A few more from my experience… Rubrics Written assessments

10 Opportunities to Learn Materials and resources (does not need to use MLA) Ways you’ll plan to differentiate instruction attention difficulty, developmental continuum, special needs (physical, cognitive, emotional) Technology incorporated?

11 Lesson plan brainstorming Let’s look at the template one more time What and why; How to; What and When again? Work with a partner from your content area to share your lesson planning ideas Answer each other’s questions about this lesson plan process for literacy instruction in the content areas Push each other’s thinking to insure that each lesson includes: quality offline text, quality online text, scaffolding and thinking strategy instruction

12 Next class… Conference proposal and article due Lesson plan draft due (and bring any materials you’ll need to work on this during class) Reading Night, Chapter 3
