2 What is Textual Analysis? Textual Analysis, as the name suggests, involves the Analysis of a literary Text. It is very similar to Close Reading – you are given a passage of text and a series of questions about that text, which you have to answer. –This means that many of the strategies applied to answering Close Reading questions can be applied to Textual Analysis. Typically, Textual Analysis involves the study of fiction texts, whereas Close Reading involves non-fiction. In the Higher / Intermediate course, Close Reading is part of the Language Unit and the end of year Exam, whereas Textual Analysis is part of the Literature Unit.

4 Textual Analysis - Task In order to know the best strategies to apply before answering each question, it is important to know the type of question being asked. a)Go through each question in the passage. If this were a Close Reading, what type of question would you expect each question to be identified as: U, A, or E? b)Give evidence to support your decisions for part a).

5 Types of Close Reading / Textual Analysis Question 1.Understanding Questions: –Questions that test your knowledge of the ideas the writer expresses in the text. 2.Analysis Questions: –Questions that test your knowledge of the techniques the writer uses to express his ideas. 3.Evaluation Questions: –Questions that test your ability to give your opinion on the ideas and techniques used in the text, and to be able to support it with evidence.
