 The San José State University Accessible Education Center (AEC) Division of Student Affairs, is a comprehensive center providing students with accommodations and services.  The Center works closely with faculty, staff, programs and departments to deliver services and promote access for students with disabilities in the classroom and throughout the campus.  Second Floor MLK Library Room 230 CENTER FOR ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY (CAT) Fall 2015 Hours Monday – Friday 8AM-6PM

 The Center for Accessible Technology (CAT) staff provides assistive technology training and alternative media to students with disabilities.  Students referred for training learn to utilize assistive technology and subsequently mainstream to computer labs throughout the campus where the same adaptations are provided, ensuring equal access. CENTER FOR ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY (CAT)

 Possible alternative media formats include Braille, e-text (electronic text), Mp3, and large print.  Alternative format produced for curriculum requirements only and are determined by individual student need and the ability to provide the curriculum material in the desired format.  The CAT is one of the largest adaptive computing centers in the country.  The Center utilizes the latest adaptive hardware and software with approximately thirty accessible stations and trained staff.  Industrial Studies Building Room 222 DEAF & HARD OF HEARING (DHOH) DH OH Fall 2015 Hours Monday/Tuesday: 9AM-5PM Wednesday: 10AM-5PM Thursday/Friday: 8AM-4PM

 Facilitates communication in the classroom, advisement meetings, during campus events or anytime such an accommodation is curriculum related.  The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services Program provides professional Educational Sign Language Interpreting and Educational Real-Time Captioning services.  Note-taking services and an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) Loaner Program are also available.  Matriculated students are assisted with priority registration so service accommodations can be arranged.  Test Accommodations are provided only in courses where the functional limitation(s) indicate need.  AEC administers exams Monday-Thursday 9AM to 8 PM and Friday 9AM to 4PM. To obtain the Faculty & Student Test Accommodations Regulations visit TESTING CENTER

WHAT ARE REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS? Accommodations are legally required adaptations that ensure individuals with a disability an equal opportunity for success.

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS ARE NOT… reasonable if making the accommodation or allowing participation poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others reasonable if making the accommodations means making a substantial change in an essential element of the curriculum (educational viewpoint) or a substantial alteration in the manner in which you provide your services reasonable if it poses an undue financial or administrative burden

What do all of these regulations mean to San José State University?  Matriculated students with disabilities have the right to receive accommodations providing them equal access to all programs and services  This includes curriculum accommodations and co- curricular REGULATIONS GOVERNING POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION & STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

PROVIDING COURSE ACCOMMODATIONS Most accommodations are simple to provide, such as extended time on exams and/or assignments, enlarged print, quiet/private rooms. Some accommodations require assistance from others to provide, such as alternative media (Braille, MP3, etc.), web access, class assistant, etc. Instructors should partner with the institutional resources for assistance such as the Accessible Education Center.

The Accommodations Review Board (ARB) was established in 1995 by President Robert Caret with Presidential Directive (PD) PD has been superseded by PD The ARB was formed to act as a dispute resolution board that reviewed conflicts between students and faculty regarding accommodations prescribed by the AEC. The ARB reports directly to the Provost. ACCOMMODATIONS REVIEW BOARD (ARB)
