7 7 Universal Design for Learning UDL is the process of making our course concepts educationally accessible regardless of learning style, physical or sensory ability from Ensuring Access through Collaboration and Technology

8 8 Major Components of Universal Design for Learning  Collaboration: Instructional strategies and assessment methods to include all learning styles and abilities  Technology: Flexible access (web, multimedia, etc.) to contents so that users can take advantage of digital and assistive technologies

9 9 Flexible Access  Digital technology  Software provide accessible features for authoring, publishing, viewing, i.e. MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, Mozilla Firefox, etc.  Assistive technology  Text to speech or screen reader, i.e. JAWS, etc.  Screen magnification

10 10 Write Once, Reap Many 1.ESL students 2.International students 3.Returning veterans and older adult learners 4.Students with undiagnosed or undisclosed learning disabilities 5.Students with visible or invisible learning disabilities

11 11 Recommendations for Creating Accessible Documents in General 1.Ensure content is digital and not a scanned image of text that is not editable. 2.Provide text equivalent information (alt text or caption) for images and point and click objects. 3.Ensure content elements are structured with tagged styles and formatting, i.e. title, headings, etc. 4.Avoid using the Enter key to create space in page formatting. 5.Avoid using Text Boxes in Microsoft as containers for text. 6.Avoid using colors as the only information indicators. 7.Describe the destinations of hyperlink titles in addition to the URLs. 8.Avoid flickering visual elements.
