Chapter 17 ~lesson 1 Concept: Why did the Church leaders continue to call for justice and peace? Conclave: the secret meeting where the cardinals come together to select a pope

Chapter 17 ~lesson 1 Church Leaders Continue to Call for Justice and Peace  Pope Paul VI showed concern for international justice and world peace.  He issued an encyclical “Populorum Progressio” ( On The Development of People) in  His 1971 Apostolic letter “Octogesima Adveniens” or”Eightieth Anniversary, honored Pope Leo XIII’s social justice encyclical Rerum Novarum.  Pope Paul VI died in 1978, and after 2 days of voting, Pope John Paul I was elected.  He died 33 days later would be referred to as the “year of three popes.”

Chapter 17 ~lesson 1  In October 1978 a second conclave was convened.  After 3 days, Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow, Poland was elected.  He was the first non-Italian Pope since the 16 th century and one of the youngest in about 130 years.

Chapter 17 ~lesson 1  He took the name of John Paul II.
