What is Coaching?

Ongoing process to increase competence, overcome barriers & improve performance. Developing skills Maximising performance Achieving goals Not directing, instructing or telling Raising personal awareness and responsibility “ Put simply, coaching is a conversation, or series of conversations, one person has with another” Julie Starr - The Coaching Manual “Coaching is the art of facilitating another person’s learning, development and performance. Through coaching, that person is able to find their own solutions, develop their own skills and change their own behaviours and attitudes. “ Whittleworth 2010

What coaching isn’t Training a structured process to provide employees with the knowledge and skills to perform tasks. Counseling usually focuses on past to assist people who have lost the inner resources to solve their own issues. It is assumed with coaching that people have necessary inner resources. Mentor provides advice guidance and support but quite often adopts a coaching style to do this. Mentor role would last longer than a coaching session and would require the mentor to have some knowledge of the subject area.

What does coaching involve? Asking effective questions Actively listening Be aware and attentive to non verbal language Give and receive feedback Remain detached and non judgemental Build rapport and empathy

What are the benefits? Encourages the individual to take action to increase their personal performance and professional effectiveness. Helps people cope with transition and manage the anxiety created by increased levels of complexity and uncertainty Provide a lower cost benefit ratio than many other developmental approaches

What are the benefits? Its results focused and deals with real professional and life issues. Builds personal commitment to learning and continued professional and personal development Helps improve team engagement, involvement and motivation
