Before WWI Russia was an autocracy The tsar (or czar) was the absolute ruler The last tsar was Nicholas II

During WWI Russia had problems – Millions were killed, wounded, or missing in war – Soldiers did not have enough supplies – People were hungry – Germany was winning The tsar ignored the problems – he did not want to change

1917 Riots in the streets – Women, factory workers, and farmers Military could not control them Tsar's army turned against him – He and his family were captured – Another revolution took place – Lenin took power and called Russia “The Soviet Union” – The tsar and his family were executed

The Soviet Union signed a peace treaty with Germany. The Soviets gave good farmland to Germany They had no choice – their country was falling apart.
