New France Intro and Mercantalism

New France  The first colonial settlement in what is now Canada, was the creation of the great Age Of European Exploration!  Towards the end of the 15 th century, European navigators ventured out onto the worlds oceans to pioneer sailing routes to Asia and America

 After the main discovery by Christopher Columbus many countries were eager to travel/explore this new land as well.  3 other main men came to the America’s and explored further….  Can you guess who they were?  (aka the 3 Big C’s)

Purpose of New France the Colony  The first permanent settlement was Quebec City in Like all other colonies, it had two main functions.  1) To supply raw materials (fur, fish and forests-lumber) to the “Mother Country” - France  2) to be a market for manufactured goods (AKA MERCANTALISM)

 The purpose behind this was to make $$ for the MC (mother country- France in this case) by exploiting the colonies.  This economic policy was called the Mercantile System

Mercantalim  This theory was a relationship between the colony (New France) and the MC (France)  It worked to the DISADVANTAGE of the colony. (Nouvelle-France) in 3 main ways…  1) the interests of the colony were always secondary to those of the MC  2) the colony developed unevenly according to the needs to the MC  3) trade with places other than the MC was forbidden.
