Matter and Mixtures Pure Substances and Mixtures

Anything that takes up space and has mass (Everything around you!) What is Matter?

Scientists classify matter by its composition… Matter can be classified as: Pure Substance: Elements and compounds Mixture: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous

Matter

Pure Substance Matter with definite physical and chemical properties. Elements and Compounds are pure substances.

Simplest form of a pure substance Cannot be physically or chemically broken down into anything else (One atom) Elements

Compounds Union of two or more elements CAN be broken down chemically (not physically) Has a chemical formula

Mixtures Substances that are combined together physically but NOT chemically! There are homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures

Homogenous A mixture that appears to be the same throughout It is “well mixed” The particles are very small and not recognizable

Heterogeneous Not evenly mixed Particles can be seen

Different types of mixtures… Solutions: when a substance is dissolved in another Alloy: mixture of metals Colloids: particles are mixed together but not dissolved Suspension: mixture of particles that will eventually settle

Test your knowledge!!!!! Is it an element, compound, or mixture?

element, compound, or mixture? Rocks

element, compound, or mixture? Copper

element, compound, or mixture? Skittles

element, compound, or mixture? Table sugar

element, compound, or mixture? Gold

element, compound, or mixture? Sweet tea

element, compound, or mixture? Salt

element, compound, or mixture? Neon gas

element, compound, or mixture? Salad

element, compound, or mixture? Pure water

element, compound, or mixture? Italian dressing

element, compound, or mixture? Ranch dressing

element, compound, or mixture? FRUIT SALAD!!!!

I will assign you a job for making the fruit salad TEAM FRUIT! Cut apples Cut bananas Cut grapes Cut strawberries TEAM SERVE IT! Put fruit salad into cups Serve to class TEAM WHIPPED CREAM! Pour cream Measure sugar Measure Vanilla Whip it, whip it good TEAM EAT! EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Om nom nom nom nom!
