Example from Model Paragraph Throughout the entire novel, there are many different scenarios in which innocence plays a key role. The first example of this comes from the lynch mob scene, where Jem, Dill and Scout find Atticus sitting outside the jail to where Tom Robinson was moved. Once the kids thought Atticus was in danger they ran over to help. Scout did not really know what was going on, but she noticed Mr. Cunningham in the crowd. On chapter 15 page 153 Scout inquires, “Don’t you remember me, Mr. Cunningham? I’m Jean Louise Finch. You brought us some hickory nuts one time, remember?” This excerpt from the novel demonstrates the effectiveness of innocence. Scout did not know what Mr. Cunningham and the mob were trying to do, so Scout just talked to Mr. Cunningham as if she would any other time. With Scout doing this, Mr. Cunningham calls off the mob, which possibly saved Atticus and Tom Robinson. This shows how innocence can affect people. The mob had full intentions of killing Tom Robinson and whoever got in their way, but Scout was able to stop them by her innocence to the situation. Underline each direct quote. Highlight the attribution in one color (how it is introduced) and highlight the quote’s ANALYSIS (showing how it demonstrates the theme) in another color. Put a # next to the SYMBOL & its discussion. Then, put + sign next to either the tranisition to the next paragraph or a concluding thought.
