10 th Grade English Tuesday 25 Feb Agenda: Meta-Cog Log Introduction Feedback Mini-Lesson on the 3 rd Body Paragraph: Refuting the Opposition Compose 3 rd Body Paragraph Homework: Finish your 3 rd persuasive body paragraph tonight if you did not have time to finish in class.

The Meta-Cog Log For the remainder of 2 nd semester, we will be keeping track of feedback on our writing in a Meta-Cog Log. Here’s what you will be expected to write for each entry: 1. The date we do the debriefing 2. Your individual feedback of what you’re doing well and what you could improve on (written directly on your piece of paper) 3. The whole-class feedback of what most of us are doing well and what most of us could improve on (presented on the powerpoint) Periodically we will turn these in for grading, so be sure you keep up to date on your meta-cog log!

Introduction Feedback First things first! Please write:  In the left-hand margin write today’s date: 25 Feb  In the normal writing area, write Individual Feedback, then what you’re doing well and what you could improve on (written directly on your piece of paper)  Below that, write HSPE Intro Debrief, then write the whole- class feedback of what most of us are doing well and what most of us could improve on (presented on the powerpoint)

Common Celebrations Common Mistakes 1. Vivid word choices such as “excruciating” amounts of homework and “malicious” teachers. 2. Lengthy development of ideas – 5-7 sentences for each intro style. 3. Clear thesis declaring position and 3 key points. 1. Spell any number under 100 (exceptions: page numbers, percents and time). 2. Then v.s. Than. Then indicates passage of time, than indicates a comparison. 3. To v.s. Too. To is a to be verb. Too is used for excess like “too tired.” Too is also a synonym for also, like “I want to go, too.” 4. Time: 10:00 p.m. or can spell out: ten o’clock, noon, midnight HSPE Introduction Debrief

Common Celebrations Common Mistakes 1. Excellent Topic Sentences with ATW, arguable point, and reason to prove that point. 2. Strong ATWs – keep using them: Significantly, Furthermore, Moreover 3. Good fake percentages to prove your arguable point. 1. Consider your audience when choosing your 3 reasons to prove your point. School board wants to hear about developing mature, responsible, time- managing students. Might not be as concerned with fun. 2. Make fake quotes creative and specifically designed to prove your point. They should not just restate your point in a quote. HSPE Body Paragraphs Debrief

Redoing Your Paragraph: only required if I wrote “please redo” Now that we’re done with meta-cog logs, you can begin editing your paragraph (only required if it says, “Please redo.” If not, you’re good to go!) Please erase and correct each mistake. If you wrote in pen, it might be easier to rewrite the paragraph on a new sheet of paper. Please circle each revised mistake and turn in the original draft along with the new paragraph. Redoing? Currently in the grade book as a *, but after you resubmit your paragraph with all corrected mistakes, I will enter your score. Don’t have to redo? Feel free to work on other homework or take a nap!

Learning Targets for Persuasive Body Paragraph #3 1. I can brainstorm one point that the opposition might bring up to prove their opinion is true. 2. I can decide what their point fails to consider/acknowledge/ or prove. 3. I can point out problems in the opposition’s viewpoint. 4. I can offer a solution that works as a compromise between our two ways of thinking.

Prompt for Today’s Persuasive Essay Should teacher’s be allowed to assign homework? In an essay for the school board, argue if homework should or should not be allowed in schools and explain why.

3 rd Body Paragraph: Refute the Opposition 1. “Some might argue..”What would the opposite side say? 2. “While there might be some truth to this point, it fails to...” What does it fail to recognize/acknowledge/prove? 3. Why is the opposite view problematic? 4. What is a compromise that could work as a solution between your viewpoint and the opposite one?
