Knowledge and Understanding Questions Describe ….. –In this question you need to provide ‘descriptions’ of a relevant issue that include specific detail/evidence of the issue. Explain …… –In this question you need to provide an explanation which gives reasons for the existence of a particular issue.

How much do I need to write? Describe questions: Point: In the USA, serious crimes such as murder, rape and robbery will face a severe sentence. Development 1: In the USA many states have a ‘three strikes’ law which imposes long prison sentences (25 years to life) on offenders who have been convicted three times. Development 2: In the USA, many states can use the death penalty for murder.

How much should I write? Explain questions Reason: Violent crime America can be a result of inequality and poverty. Explanation: Some ethnic minority groups such as Hispanics and Blacks experience greater levels of poverty, eg,25% of blacks are in poverty and so may go to commit muggings or be involved in drug dealing. Further development: Groups in poverty are also more likely to live in cheap housing areas called Ghettos like Engelwood in Chicago where drug gangs control territory. If you live in this territory you might be more likely to be involved in gangs for protection.

Revising and Preparing for the exam

Breaking down exam content You should be going through your notes and create shorter revision notes which only contain key statistics and examples to memorise. Reading through and rewriting your notes without breaking them down is NOT the best way to prepare.
