Network Topologies By: Josh Geller

Star Topology All computers are connected to a central hub. Cheap to expand as hubs are currently inexpensive. No disruption to other computers when changing devices. Problems can be isolated to individual computers. Easy installation but requires lots of cabling.

Ring Topology All computers are connected to a central trunk line. Entire network is down if a computer is removed or a cable is broken. Problems cannot be isolated easily. Easy installation and requires little cabling.

Tree Topology Cross between bus and star topology. If backbone breaks the network is down. Runs with a trunk line that is broken into other networks using switch or hubs. Individual networks can be expanded without disrupting other computers. The trunk line cannot be easily expanded as it must always be on.
