USING VIDEO CLIPS FOR EFL TEACHING

Have you ever used video/clips in your class? Can you think of ways of using them in the EFL classroom?

Few Techniques Backdoor Prediction Vocabulary Dialogue Writing Dubbing Retelling Eye witnessing

Backdoor In pairs or small groups, one or more students view and describe to the other students who have their backs to the screen. Alternate every few minutes and circulate to give help with vocab (or just write it on the board as needed, students will see you and use to describe the action. Watching & Describing Listening and note taking

Prediction Watch a small part and stop the video. Have students predict what will happen next:  Freeze frame  Imagining director

VOCABULARY depending on the theme of the video (for example in The Flat Life you can use action words and / or furniture) have students make lists of words and then use them to

DIALOGUE Students watch and then re-enact the dialogue in the story. Add in a narrator if necessary. This is a great speaking/writing combined lesson. Get them even to use speech bubbles and draw cartoons of the story.

WRITING A different ending Have students retell the story, rewrite the story – but with a different ending. First retell and use this as an engagement activity for some really creative writing! Make sure to do the most important part of the writing process Dialogue Writing Have students write a dialogue of their own based on the silent video that they have just watched

Dubbing Have students watch 2-3 minutes silent video clip in which there is the dialogue scene. Then, group the students and ask them to think of what the characters are talking about Acting it out while the video clip is played. Or role play it.

Retelling Students are asked to retell the story in the clips. It can be done with video clips which are not longer than 2-3 minutes.

Eye Witnessing Students are grouped in two 2 groups and or more. Where some groups acts as policemen and the others act as witness. This can be easily done by asking the acting as policemen to leave the room while the others acting as eyewitness stay in the room and watch the clips
