By the end of this podcast you should know: 1. The definition editing. 2. The 3 things editing accomplishes in a film. By then end of this podcast, you should be able to describe the editing in a clip and explain how composition affects editing.

3 The art of putting shots together to make a complete film.
What is editing? The art of putting shots together to make a complete film.

4 Why is editing so important?
An awesome, well-composed shot is just a photograph if it’s not combined with others. You don’t even need any words if this is done well! VISUAL word. 

5 Composition is related to editing
We learned that a well-composed shot makes your eye move around the frame. Therefore, the editing will be slower if there is more to look at in the frame.

6 Citizen Kane Take this example from the famous film Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane Take this example from the famous film Citizen Kane. The main character Charles Foster Kane seems small and unimportant in this shot while the characters in the foreground make decisions about his life. His size relative to the window is almost an optical illusion.

7 What does editing accomplish?
Compresses time in the story. Can develop plot, characterization, theme, and/or mood. Allows directors to film in order of convenience, not chronological order.

8 1. Editing Compresses time
Eliminates portions of time we don’t need to see. Allows us to see an entire lifetime or longer in about 2 hours.

9 2. Editing Can develop plot, characterization theme, and/or mood.
Plot- every movie you’ve ever seen. Characterization- Patton Opening of Once Upon a Time in the West also really good. Theme- Cast Away- after the crash 40 minutes of the film has no dialogue to show theme of isolation and power of nature.

10 Mood- Psycho

11 3. Editing allows directors to film in order of convenience, not chronological order.
Because all shots aren’t filmed the same day, someone- a continuity director- needs to make sure the details from 1 day/take carry through to the next so the scene looks “continuous” to the viewer. Mistakes are called continuity errors. compilation of errors spiderman mistakes The Matrix mistakes
