Tips and Tricks Keywords: adding additional terms or keywords can redefine your search and make the most relevant information show at the top of the results. Keywords can be added by using the all these words field.

Tips and Tricks Continued... Phrases: By linking two words together as a phrase you can enhance your search, because your results will be limited to only include your keywords when they are listed together. Example - If you enter “joplin tornado” as your phrase this will be considered top priority, therefore Janis Joplin, or Scott Joplin should not appear in your search results.

Tips and Tricks Continued... Excluding Terms: often a search will include related terms due to the large amount of material on the web. To counter this exclude pages that have any of these unwanted tools To exclude a word use a minus (-) before the search. (ex: “Joplin tornado” - Janis

Need More Tools This feature provides access to filters by site, file type, reading level, and more...

Need more tools Continued... Reading level - this feature allows you to filter your search to match the reading level of your students. Can select between Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced reading levels. File Type - Allows users to search for a specific file type such as, powerpoint or an Excel spreadsheet. There are 10 different file types to choose from.

Need more tools Continued... Search within a Site or Domain - this feature gives you the choice to search for a specific resource on a particular website. Benefit - search can be done through one website versus the entire internet.

Google Instant This feature allows google to predict your possible searches and instantly show results as your typing. If you do not want predictive results 1. Go into the Search Setting on Google.com 2. About halfway down the page, you’ll find the option, Do not use Google Instant.

Timeline Typing in a search term with a timeline will provide a historical reference to your topic. (Useful in Social Studies and Science) Found along the lower left side of your search results screen in google.

Google Image Search This feature allows users to begin their search with an image Google only searches for images related to the term typed in the search engine Difficult to filter out inappropriate content

Google Images Continued... Additional Search Options Sorting by relevance - organize results by subjects Image Size - Filter image results by their size Color - Filter results by color Type - Filters results by their type ( is the image a face, a photograph, clip art, or a line drawing) Show Sizes - Use this option to see each image’s size displayed directly on the results page

SafeSearch This feature allows users to search with a filter that should keep adult images out of the list of results. SafeSearch settings can be changed at any time. (Default is moderate)

Book Search Digital Copies of Books that google created and stored within the google database. Free to access and read online To access this feature: 1. Click on the more link on the menu across the top of the screen 2. In the drop-down menu, select Books link 3. The Google Books entry will display. Here you can search for books by typing in a keyword, title, author, or line from a specific book.

Time Saving Searches These are ready-reference categories of basic information. A few are: Weather - typing “weather” and the name of a city or zip code in the search box, google will load a 4-day forecast for that area (example type weather 14222). Unit Conversation - Use to convert distances, weights, volumes, and more. (example type 2,000 feet in miles). Dictionary - Find definitions for unknown words. Just type define along with the word. Calculator - includes basic functions, but can also perform as a scientific calculator.

Time Saving Searches Continued... Fill in the - provides an answer to a specific question. Type your statement and place an asterisk in the blank part of your question; the search results will return with your answer bolded in the site descriptions. (Ex: type cheese is made of *) Public Data - Provides information about recent trends in population and unemployment.

Translates Translate Webpages - google has the ability to translate an entire webpage Translates Documents From Your Computer - Simply click the translate a document link and submit your file as PDF, TXT, DOC, PPT, XLS, or RTF.
