1 EUCOS Fourth WMO Workshop on the Impact of Various Observing Systems on Numerical Weather Prediction May 2008, WMO, Geneva, Switzerland Stefan Klink (EUCOS), Stewart Turner (Met Office), David Richardson, Cristina Prates, Cihan Sahin (ECMWF) Short presentation of the EUCOS/PREVIEW Data Targeting System (DTS)

4th WMO OSE/OSSE Workshop May 2008, WMO, Geneva, Switzerland 2 Data Targeting System 50% funded by Eurorisk PREVIEW 50% funded by EUCOS Aim is to deliver additional meteorological observations over key sensitive regions to aid : Prediction and early warning of high impact weather events over Europe Reduction of forecast uncertainty Support crisis management over regions impacted by severe events by providing access to targeted Met observations Met Office lead, partnering with ECMWF. Pre-operational trial began in February 2008 (restricted users) Full access to all interested users began in March 2008 A website for the system exists at:

4th WMO OSE/OSSE Workshop May 2008, WMO, Geneva, Switzerland 7 Statistics 4th February to 22nd April 2008 (inclusive) Cases suggested by UKMO, Meteo-France, ECMWF and DWD Total number of cases proposed: 112 Total number of cases accepted: 99 Additional 73 cases from the IPY-THORPEX experiment (automatically accepted) SACs are performed for all accepted cases Extra observations requested from 42 cases 201 observations requested (including AMDAR) 155 observations requested (excluding AMDAR) 110 extra observations deployed (excluding AMDAR)

4th WMO OSE/OSSE Workshop May 2008, WMO, Geneva, Switzerland 8 Summary The DTS is progressing according to schedule A prototype trial demonstrated that: Very significant efficiencies have been achieved since the 2003 A- TReC activity The DTS is a very straightforward and user-friendly tool Good level of participation 18 Participating European Met. Services User base OK but could be larger 9 Users volunteered 6 registered (UK, Germany, France, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands) 3 have suggested cases (UK, Germany, France)
