Implementation in the Classroom Teacher Experiences Wide range of teachers to share practices with Special Needs Pre-K to 5 th grade from 3 CCS schools Teachers enjoyed being able to integrate all aspects of the curriculum, while also introducing new engineering experiences to the students Teachers quickly found that all subjects could be incorporated EIE – Ohio: Building 21 st Century Learners

Engineering is Elementary provided opportunities for teachers to teach and students to learn in a different mindset using the Engineering Design Process: Implementation in the Classroom Teacher Experiences (cont.)

Implementation in the Classroom Teacher Experiences (cont.) Communication Collaboration Creativity Critical Thinking Helps students build and develop the skills to grow as 21 st century learners:

Implementation in the Classroom Literacy Connections With each unit, a set of storybooks is included in the kit Fictional story about a child who has a problem that needs to be fixed Introduces the engineering field and how this particular one can help solve the problem

Implementation in the Classroom Literacy Connections (cont.) Ways EiE can be integrated into the literacy curriculum: Power Point Story- Have illustrations on the SmartBoard, verbally tell the story to students Small group instruction-Provide students with copies of the book, can do partner reading, respond to the text, etc. With research opportunities- Can extend learning into the engineering field even more– Infohio, webquests, etc.

Using the “Tower Power” Activity to introduce engineering, STEM journals also utilized throughout the Unit

Testing materials in lesson 2 of the Environmental Engineering unit

STEM At-Home Projects created after hearing the story Super Ladybug to the Rescue. The Engineering Design process was used during and after the creation.

Teacher participation in various parts of the workshop

Throughout not only the summer, but continuing through the school year, teachers from across the district were able to collaborate and network with each other to integrate EiE into their curriculum to support their students as 21 st century learners. EIE – Ohio: Building 21 st Century Learners
