1 Spring 2013 OMSP Request For Proposal

2 The purpose of this PowerPoint is to highlight critical components of the Request for Proposals that have historically proven problematic for applicants. Applicants should read the entire Request for Proposal before applying for Ohio Mathematics, Science Partnership Funds.

3 Timeline Submission Deadline: 5 PM Submissions will be accepted and considered (as long as funding is available) on June 7, 14 and 21, 2013.

4 Submission Please remember the application process consists of both an electronic submission of the grant proposal and a paper submission of the grant cover letter, assurances, budget narrative and budget. All signatures must be in blue ink.

5 The Ohio Department of Education will hold to the deadlines listed on the previous slide. Grant applications received after the deadline, will not be accepted or reviewed.

8 Electronic Submission Electronic: Applicants must submit the proposal electronically by 5 PM on May 8, 2013 with signature pages scanned. The proposal must be organized in the same manner as the response items listed in this section.

9 Program Goals: Increase teacher content knowledge in mathematics and/or science. Improve connections to the real world in the classroom (relevancy, inquiry, and problem-solving skills). Improve student achievement in mathematics and/or science.

10 Required: ODE Assurances Commitment from the target school to continue the program after the grant period ends

11 Must Haves STEM Faculty Involvement at School Level (STEM faculty by definition spend 80% of their time with the university’s science, technology, engineering, or mathematics department)

12 Must Haves High Needs School A list of high needs schools can be found on the ODE OMSP web page. Documentation of Private School invitation to participate

13 Must Haves Projects must document a minimum of 120 hours of professional development throughout the year.

14 Must Haves All proposed curricular materials must be based on either or both the Common Core Curriculum for Mathematics and/or Ohio Science Academic Standards

15 Must Haves All proposed curricular materials must be taught to the teachers with graduate level rigor and content

16 Must Haves At the end of the program all participates must be capable of teaching rigorous course to students based upon the Common Core Curriculum for Mathematics and/or Ohio Science Academic Standards

17 Must Haves All proposed curricular materials must be approved by either/both Ohio mathematics or science consultants, before it may be used. For Option 2 the Ohio Board of Regents must also approve of the curriculum.

18 Must Haves Option 1 Timeframe: 40 hours or longer summer; 80 hours during school year …at least 20 hours of in classroom modeling of curricular materials with a STEM professor; and at least 20 hours of in classroom modeling of appropriate technology integration.

19 Must Haves Option 2 Offer a Master Program using the Common Core Mathematics as the curriculum, or Offer a Master Program using Ohio’s 2010 Science Standards as the curriculum Programs must meet all MSP requirement and curriculum must be approved by ODE

20 Must Haves Option 2 Timeframe: Meet college degree requirement Additional Requirement: At least one graduate- level course must be taught at the target school, during the course of the school year. A majority of the funds must be used for scholarship incentives for teachers/program enrollees.

21 Must Haves Option 3 Offer a two-week (60 - 80 hours) workshop in mathematics or science that trains teacher to deliver professional development to other teachers in their school building or district. The plan must provide written verification for a minimum of four school-year days of district or building level professional development using the teachers who participated in the summer training.
